Olympics! And Chocolate! Celebrate February!
February! The month of Valentine’s Day, and this year also of the Winter Olympics! Norway has participated in every Olympics since 1900, except for the Summer Olympics in 1904 and 1980. Of Norway’s 481 Olympic medals, 329 are for excellence in winter sports. After all, winter sports are a national pastime.
We will look at the case of Therese Johaug’s chapped lips that has upset so many Norwegians, and talk about why some other familiar names are missing from this year’s lineup.
Norwegians love cheering on their winter sports heroes. But you might be surprised at how popular even athletes from other countries can be. Which American athletes might have had a following in Norway, and why?
What is your favorite Winter Olympic event? Do you think Norway will still be the country with the most total medals from Winter Olympics after this year’s closing ceremonies on February 25? Let’s hope so!
We meet on Tuesday, February 20, at 7 p.m. for skiing, skating, sledding, and chocolate! What’s not to like? See you there!
Social meetings are held at St. John's Lutheran Church at 600 6th Ave Des Moines, IA on the third Tuesday of each month. Dinner meetings at 6:30 pm, other meetings at 7pm. Variations will be listed on this web site, Facebook and in the Marsteinen newsletter.
