Sons of Norway Lodge 1-596 of Des Moines, Iowa was started on May 6th 1984. Norm Carlson, the first president of the lodge was instrumental in getting the lodge started.

 

The members chose the name MARSTEINEN, the name of a lighthouse located southwest of Bergen, Norway. This was the last landmark that the Norwegian immigrants were to see as they left Bergen for America.

 

The monthly newsletter of Marsteinen Lodge was named Marsteinen until 2001, when the name was changed to NYTT FRA FYRTÅRNET (News from the Lighthouse).
